The August Bank Holiday weekend sees the Grasmere Lakeland Sports, held on Sunday 28th August in the picturesque setting of the Showfield in Grasmere. The 2016 Grasmere Lakeland Sports is celebrating 166 years of existence, and has been a regular annual event since 1868, unbroken except for the two periods of the First and Second World Wars. Now one of the most popular traditional events in the English Lake District, participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling, Fell Running and Hound Trailing. Saturday is the opening day of the August meeting at Cartmel racecourse, one of the most picturesque racecources in the country. As always the Bank Holiday meeting is extremely popular, there is a huge funfair in the Course Enclosure and there will be lots of fun for the whole family.
The final day of the season, the Bank Holiday Celebration Hurdle is sponsored by Coral Bookmakers, and is held on Monday. The race is the highest class event staged at Cartmel and attracts the top jockeys and trainers as well as highly rated horses.

Finally on Saturday it is our local Agricultural show, the Millom & Broughton show held in West Park Broughton-in-Furness, a great day out for all the family.
